Press release
Alfie Hewett's own mobility wasn't something he chose to lose, or something that stopped him. From the age of six, wheelchair tennis gave him a way back into movement and activity, and, in time, a career, an identity, 35 Grand Slams and 5 Paralympic medals to date. Today, one of Britain's greatest wheelchair tennis players is opening that same route to thousands of children who don't currently get the chance to find or try it.
Launching in the 50th anniversary year of wheelchair tennis, Get In And Go is a nationwide initiative that gives schools, clubs and holiday camps access to entry-level sports wheelchairs on short-term hire, solving key problems Alfie has always highlighted; cost, storage and maintenance problems that have been constant barriers and kept wheelchair sport out of reach for most young people and the general public.
These aren't the highly specialised chairs used by elite wheelchair athletes - they're entry-level by design: simple to get in and out of, stackable for easy storage, and built for ages 8+, so a child can be up and playing within minutes rather than needing weeks of practice first.
The initiative is designed for every child, not just those with a disability. Disabled and non-disabled children can take part side by side. A key benefit is building non-disabled children's understanding of ability and breaking down barriers between disabled and non-disabled children, while being clear that a short session in a chair isn't the same as living as a wheelchair user every day. It's still a valuable, respectful way for non-disabled children to engage. For disabled children, it's a PE session where they're not on the sidelines, but fully integrated and taking the lead.
Importantly, and often without knowing it, every session encourages physical activity, boosts wellbeing, skill development, and social skills through teamwork, and provides a way to challenge stereotypes and stimulate a wider shift in how disability and sport integrate. Beyond opening access, Alfie's ambition is to grow awareness of wheelchair tennis and bring new fans to the sport it's built on.
How the programme works: chairs are delivered and collected, with supporting coaching material available from accredited LTA pathway coaches. This increases accessibility for staff by reducing the barriers of practical access and integrating into existing curricula. For those who want to take the sport further, Get In And Go is also building pathways beyond the sessions themselves, signposting and partnering with wheelchair sport organisations to support the next generation of wheelchair sports stars.
lululemon Gives is a global initiative dedicated to advancing solutions for mental health and wellbeing through movement and mindfulness. Through grants, partnerships, volunteering, and donations, it supports organizations that promote mental health, increase access to physical activity, and address loneliness.
Get In And Go is a lululemon Gives partner. Alfie has been a lululemon ambassador since 2025, building on a relationship that began with the brand backing him as a player on tour. Over the past 18 months, lululemon Gives has continued to support Get In And Go, helping fund the wheelchairs behind the project and now supporting its expansion into more schools, clubs, and international markets.
For lululemon Gives, the partnership reflects wellbeing in its fullest sense, by expanding access to movement, strengthening community connections, and fostering the confidence that comes from being included
The launch follows a summer in which over 10,000 people tried the chairs for the first time, across eight major events including Trafalgar Square, Birmingham and Wimbledon Park, as part of the LTA's Grass Court Season. Lexus, who have a partnership with the LTA and support the ATP World Tour, were present at every stop of the Grass Court Season from Ilkley to Eastbourne.
Lexus supports more opportunities for British players to advance their tennis careers while also supporting the grassroots sport through our Lexus centres.
The LTA is the governing body of wheelchair tennis in Britain and through its vision of Tennis Opened Up, works to grow tennis by making it welcoming, enjoyable and inspiring to everyone. The LTA will support the delivery of Get In and Go through its existing networks of partners and grassroots programmes which follows the successful collaboration to bring Get In and Go wheelchair tennis taster sessions, powered by Lexus, to the LTA's grasscourt events over the summer in Birmingham, Ilkley, Nottingham, Eastbourne and Roehampton and to a special tennis take over event in London's Trafalgar Square.
